TCU 34 - Cal 32 (ESPN Recap)

Kicking off Week 2 of the 2021 season with my 4th double-header. Shot over to Dallas which was on the way to Jackson, WY for my work trip. Lucky for me, was fortunate enough to do this one with Demitrus J who lives in Dallas.

Flew into DFW early Saturday morning and in rental car by 11am. Parked over by the baseball stadium at TCU for free street parking and then headed to the tailgates with Demitrus. Ran into a really nice crew of alumni who tailgate every home game for the last 25 years. Jaime and Kenny cooled our beers, gave us a hot dog, and also some unsolicited feedback on how to properly throw a cornhole bag. With Oregon pummeling Ohio St on the big screen in the backdrop, I knew it was going to be a good day.

Demitrus plays cornhole on average once a week and in the fall I get a little obsessive with the sport. Unsolicited yet again, Kenny challenges us to a money game while smoking a cigar. His friends warn that they’ve never seen him lose. We agree and in the back of our minds, if we lost it was a contribution to their tailgate and we got to play against someone really good. We of course smash Kenny and his partner 21-5 and the rest of his friends can’t stop laughing at him for “giving us that really useful lesson earlier.” It was funny. We didn’t lose any fun or money games.

We walked through some other set ups and rate TCU as “average” from a tailgate perspective. Nothing special, but the effort was there to have it going on.

Cal led 6-0 after Q1 with a TD on busted coverage and missed XP. Q2 was a strange quarter with lots of explosive plays, turnovers, and coaching mistakes. Highlight of the game for me was a 2nd and 10 intentional grounding down to the 4 yard line (video below), followed by a 3rd and long pick 6 which was intercepted on the 6 yard line and the DB scored before most of the offense even knew they had turned the ball over (pulled this video off Twitter). The interception was right in front of our 4th row seats.

Lost my TCU 1H -7 bets as well as a prop on total number of FGs in first half, but won first score over/under and a live bet on Cal +4.5 to make almost all of it back.

Took off for what I expected to be an easy drive from Fort Worth to Dallas, but I underestimated the madness of Texas highways in the middle of the day on a Saturday. The drive wasn’t fun.
