Hail State!

This was a special one for me. Not because the game was between two unranked 3-1 teams or it was my first time to the state of Mississippi, but because I was with 10 of my best friends. We hiked down from Madison, flew over from NH to MS and spent the weekend in Starkvegas checking out a big SEC game.

We got to GTR and then our Big House AirBnB thanks to Wayne from Cline Tours moving us around all weekend.

Starkville turned up for gameday with tons of tailgating even for the 11am kick. Friendly southerners with many MAGA mixed in. The crew made a unity bet on the O55.5 which, despite 43 second-half points (and two future 1st round 2024 NFL Draft selection WRs in Brian Thomas Jr and Malik Nabers), we came out 3 points shy of the win. The missed 30-yard FG and three turnovers past midfield in the first half were daggers. Added benefit of the early kick was a little fewer cowbell decibels during the game (didn’t hurt that LSU led wire-to-wire).

Some weird wide-open touchdowns in the 2H game and a #PublicKillers of Brightside came on which was fitting. My friends bought the hot dogs, bud lights, and cow bells. We got excited by the bet as we got within striking distance in Q4. Hopefully, I converted a few of them into wanting to join some future games because the games are much more fun when attending with friends than solo.

Cornhole, cards, and dice all weekend, we had a dinner at BBQ Little Dooey’s (environment 8.5/10 but bbq quality 6/10), did a night of bars where University Drive hits Maxwell St, tailgated, and did the game. The intersection of four bars was a fascinating social experiment since it seemed like they were four amazing bars, and also the only bars in the entire town. We did Two Brothers since they had an outdoor area and live music. Cool spot and they must make an absolute killing with $20 covers which in Mississippi dollars is like $100 covers in a major city.
